SimCity in Second Life - Should the Civilization Have Cars?

by L. Winslow

Second Life has some expensive real estate indeed and there are all types of new cities springing up. So what do these would be city planners have in mind online? Well here is an interesting question considering the Global Warming and CO2 issues; Should there be cars, shouldn't there be; asks one innovative thinker.

Well, I do not know much about this city, but if it is an city or even an island without a country, and the island is small then NO, but depending on the age of the population some people might need transportation. Now most futuristic cities in Second life do have public transportation and bullet trains and there can be centralized transportation of course, especially things like subways, if high-density warrants that.

If the city is large like Los Angeles then without cars it gets tough, but if the density is like NYC then it makes a lot of sense to skip the cars and use that space for other more appropriate uses. If it is an Island City like Plato's legendary "Atlantis" well then it can be whatever you make of it. What if it is a large island like Guam, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Iceland, well then you might rethink that idea of no cars. Indeed, even the Online Think Tank does not have enough details to answer that questions of course.

Why not have cars?

Well, let us say that the inhabitants are coming from other first world nations to live in the futuristic city, they most likely will want to have cars? Having been involved in Ride Share Programs, TMAs and watched the difficulty in trying to get people to carpool, not having cars might be a tough one for present period cyber or virtual humans to take. And since this is all make believe; if on our perfect island community people are allowed to live forever, then they would be in good shape and they could walk it is only 3 miles square no problem.

A transportation system could pick up the slack sometimes if it was hot and muggy, people were wearing dress clothes in the humidity. Is banning cars from the city of the future a viable option? Well if it truly is in the future probably not. Why, well because the people on the island would be free to create and probably be designing new transportation devices, flying cars for the world and be a knowledge based society, so you cannot outlaw them, but they are not needed either.

Again, we must consider health issues too. Does your future city in Second Life have universal health care? If so you know that people who walk 3 miles a day live 10-years longer, those are healthy habits and that is a good thing. Lots to think on, so good look rebuilding human habitats in your Second Virtual Life.

MIS surgery in fracture fixation has become a new concept. Minimal invasive surgery means to avoid any additional trauma to the already traumatised tissues. Plate & screw fixation has been a known concept for years. But this needs opening of the fracture site; increasing the chances of infection, scaring of the tissues and increased stiffness increasing the duration of physio days and also decreasing the final outcome.
MIS surgery in fracture fixation, a new concept made popular by Dr. B.B Joshi, by the introduction of JESS. The concept makes us get the alignment of fracture fragment without opening the fracture site. The external frame put avoids the use of plasters and the resultant stiffness.
As seen in this video, patient could do her day-to day activities on the next day of surgery, as the fracture heals. No incisions, so no scars, so cosmetically much superior. No chance of getting any infection at fracture site, no need of physio, as patient is back in action from the next day. This concept has revolutionist the outlook towards the care of a fracture patient.
This surgery was performed for the first time in Goa by Dr. Amey Velingker, Orthopaedic and Joint replacement surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Goa.
