A Look at Sonic the Hedgehog on Sega Genesis
by N. Ramius
One of the most iconic characters in gaming history, Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega's answer to Nintendo's Mario. It all started back in 1991 with the release of a game called Sonic the Hedgehog. The main character was a blue furry hedgehog who had to defeat Dr. Robotnik, sometimes called Eggman who had grandiose plans of taking over the world and turning all the adorable animals of South Island into robotic minions. Thus was born the fastest hero of the time.
The success of the first game led to the sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2. After Dr. Robotnik met defeat at the end of Sonic's first adventure, he followed him to West Side Island. There Sonic met Tails and Dr. Robotnik learned of the seven chaos emeralds. He once again enslaved the animals and setup his new plan. It was up to a hedgehog and a two tailed fox named Tails to stop him. Sonic 2 introduced Tails, a two player mode, Super Sonic and the chaos emeralds.
The third installment in the series, at least for Genesis, would be Sonic 3. This time on Angel Island Dr. Robotnik tried to regain the emeralds to rebuild his space station, tricking Knuckles into defeating Sonic for him. The game introduced a save feature and let the player play as Sonic or Knuckles. Part two of this game is the unique Sonic & Knuckles expansion which offered a lock on technology to let user play the predecessor games. The original was the only Sonic game exempt. Any other game inserted into the lock on technology generated an error, but pressing the proper code let one play a self repeating mini game. Sonic & Knuckles introduced the seven super emeralds and ability to unlock Hyper Sonic.
These four games made up the early Genesis collection of the furry blue Hedgehog and brought fame to Sega.
